Our mission

Literacy, in the language that's actually theirs.

Alfa is a non-profit built to equip the volunteers, parents and community educators who show up for children, giving them the lesson plans and worksheets they need to teach reading and languages themselves.

Children writing at classroom desks while a teacher leans in to help

The name comes from alfabetização in Portuguese and alfabetización in Spanish, the words the communities we serve already use for literacy. We kept the word they use, because the work belongs to them, not to us.

We offer printable and online lesson plans across language tracks in English, Portuguese and Spanish, and we share them on request.

Alfa works with no devices and no internet, and it backs up the volunteer as much as the student.

Three languages, one method

The same lesson plans and worksheets, built in the language a classroom actually teaches in: printable for the ones with a printer, online for the ones with a connection.

English

English

Our main new-language track: students grow from first letters to real conversations.

Português

Portuguese

Literacy and language lessons written the way Portuguese-speaking classrooms use them.

Español

Spanish

The same pages in Spanish, so a lesson never has to leave the child's own language.

How the kit is built

Two tracks, three levels each. Every level pairs a lesson plan with a matching worksheet, and every level comes with a teacher guide for running the room.

Literacy track

Children learning to read and write in the language they already speak.

  1. 1

    Foundations

Letters, sounds and first marks on paper.

  2. 2

    Building

Blending, sight words and short sentences.

  3. 3

    Fluency

Reading aloud, understanding a page, writing on your own.

Students adding a second language, mainly English, with Portuguese and Spanish support.

  1. 1

What we hold on to

Equip the teacher, never replace them

Alfa supports the volunteer as much as the student. Every level comes with a teacher guide and classroom-management help.

No devices, no internet

Everything works with a printer and a pencil. No app to install, no login, no connection needed in the room.

In the language that's actually theirs

Lessons come in English, Portuguese and Spanish, because learning starts where a child already is.
